The candidate will be employed at the The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Southern Denmark and will be enrolled in the department PhD program under the supervision by Prof. Ole Jensen.

Project description

The PhD research project entails the analysis of temporal abundance profiles of proteins and their post-translational modifications (PTMs, e.g. phosphorylation, acetylation, glycosylation). The candidate will test, apply and benchmark novel affinity enrichment tools based on molecularly imprinted materials (MIPs) to elucidate the molecular mechanisms and regulatory features that maintain specific cellular lineages or lead to disease, such as cancer. The main focus will be the testing and implementation of MIP technologies and related methods for in-depth PTM analysis at a proteome-wide scale using advanced mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and bioinformatics.

The project will include secondments to Malmö University (SE) –Molecular Imprinting technology; Biotage, Lund (Sweden) – Analytical method validations; Cancer Research UK Manchester (UK) – High throughput omics platforms.

The Protein Research Group offers a strong international research environment in protein chemistry, biomolecular mass spectrometry, and computational proteomics (www.protein.sdu.dk). The VILLUM Center for Bioanalytical Sciences at SDU provides world-class facilities for proteomics and mass spectrometry research. Our functional proteomics efforts include the implementation of PTM database tools, statistical analysis for deciphering PTM cross-talk in protein networks, and quantitative functional proteomics (Sidoli et al. (2016) Proteomics16(3):459-464;  Schwämmle et al. (2016) Mol. Cell. Proteomics 5(8):2715-272;  Casanovas et al. (2015) Chem Biol. 22(3):412-425; Schwämmle et al. Institute description

The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2016. SDU offers more than 60 educational programs and has an enrollment of approximately 30.000 students. The main campus is located in Odense, the third largest city of Denmark, with easy access to city life, countryside exercising and coastal activities.

SDU Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) has a staff of 25 tenured investigators. The department is well known internationally for its top level proteomics and biological mass spectrometry research. Other strong enabling technologies include state-of-the art next generation sequencing, metabolomics/lipidomics, bioimaging, and biocomputing.

Ideal candidate

We are seeking outstanding candidates with documented experience in bioanalytical chemistry, protein biochemistry or functional proteomics. Expertise in protein mass spectrometry, molecular cell biology and bioinformatics is an advantage but not a requirement. Candidates will be part of an European research team (BioCapture project) and good interpersonal skills and fluency in the English language (reading/writing/speaking) is a requirement.

Working conditions and benefits

The candidate will become an employee of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Southern Denmark and receive a competitive monthly gross salary in accordance with the EC Marie Sklodowska-Curie rules. The contract period will last for 3 years.
